     Tendé nosed the car out of the traffic, changing from lane to lane along the sea-front, the sound of their conversation whipping around him as he accelerated and slowed, the dark blue expanse of white-crested waves on their right. Bursts of laughter and conversations in a foreign language punctured the air as they pulled up beside one convertible after another, all nosing and champing at the red lights like racehorses against the line. They left the town and climbed high into the hills. The stiff black cypress trees waved, unbending, in the breeze – apricot, pear, lavender, mimosa... the scents mingled with the light coming through the new leaves on the olive branches – it was spring; everything bursting with life.
